1/48 AMT A-20G Havoc

INTRODUCTION
Well this was a kit that was over a year in the making. For me it was one of those kits you would use to fill in some time while you were waiting for other kits to dry, etc. All I can say now is........."NEVER AGAIN".

CONSTRUCTION
Construction for me was rough from the get go. If you are building this kit, or any of the other AMT kits in this line, it will be wise to the nose half to the corresponding fuselage half first. Then with the new fuselage halves, assemble the fuselage as you normally would. I didn't and had to sand, fill and rescribe where the nose section met the fuselage section.

If you are going to pose you A-20 with the bomb bay doors closed, you will need to add in some sort of bracing so you have something to glue the doors on to. The kit doesn't provide any tabs for this, so without something, glueing the doors would probably be next to impossible.

The fit of the wings, horizontal stabs and the tail to the fuselage left some substantial steps to deal with. A lot of sanding and filling was required in these areas. The engine nacels on the tops of the wing didn't fit worth a hoot either, requiring lots of filler and sanding again. The engine cowling and gear bay housing, well pretty much the same story there.

If you think you can effectively mask off the main gear bracing while installed, go right ahead and install them per the instructions. I waited until the whole thing was painted and it took some slow and patient work, but I got them in there. If you think that the main gear seems flimsy, once you glue things togther and they setup, this gear is rock solid.

Make sure to also put plent of weight in the nose, as she'll be a tail sitter for sure if you don't.

COCKPIT
Nothing was done to the cockpit other than picking out the details with a brush and placing a drop of Future on each of the dials to simulate the glass.

PAINT / DECALS
The plane was painted with Model Master Enamels, Olive Drab over Neutral Gray. The invasions stripes were masked off with Tamiya tape and shot. The blotching on the leading and trailing edges of the wings and stabilizers were traced with a pencil and shot freehand using Model Master Medium Green.

WRAPPING UP
I replaced the 6 gun barrels in the noze and the 2 barrels in the turret with hypodermic tubing. I utilized the True Details raft and wheels set. The wheels that come with the kit are just plain bad. The tread looks more like scales on a a fish.

CONCLUSION
While I don't plan building one of the other version available from AMT any time soon, I am glad that I didn't give up several times when things looked bleak. Was it a fun kit to build? For me, NO! I had more fun in painting this one than I did building it.
